Workshop: Follow the Social Media Money

Millions of people are making money from their social media activity, but we don't have a good grasp of who these individuals are, nor whether platforms are effectively enforcing their own monetization policies to prevent incentivizing and financially rewarding harmful content and behavior.

In this hands-on workshop, participants will learn how to use the monetization.wtf portal and the Meta Monetization Archive to investigate revenue generation from social media. You will learn about platforms’ monetization policies, learn how to identify pages monetizing in your language, and explore the implications of unregulated monetization for information integrity.

This session builds on WHAT TO FIX's research into platform monetization services and will provide practical tools for journalists, researchers, and civil society organizations working to hold platforms accountable.
